Visiting DM Kineton

STEM ambassadors from DM Kineton came to Space Studio Banbury in September to kick off our Core Project work. All the ambassadors are engineers and they explained the design and structural engineering associated with the largest ammunition store in Western Europe.

Year 10 students were then very lucky to be invited in October to a controlled explosion demonstration, not something schools are usually invited to. Sergeant Stark laid on an engaging programme for the morning.

Zoe noted how helpful it was to actually go to the site and see the storage silos as it made it so much easier to understand the engineering principles. The students were impressed with the explosions; Harry particularly picked out the ‘Hollywood’ explosion with the added fuel and Victoria most appreciated the opportunity to work in the site classroom on research and presentation. Sgt. Stark gave the students 15 minutes to research one of the displays, then picked at random one of the group to present their findings. All students made progress in their presentation skills – a very useful skill for future employability. Students were also impressed with the army presenters who clearly explained the different types of explosive and talked to them about their training for all the different engineering roles at DM Kineton.
