Aspirations Employability Portfolio

Banbury Academy and Space Studio Banbury

Sixth Form AEP StudentsAll Year 12 students from Banbury Academy and Space Studio Banbury are very fortunate to have an exciting opportunity to work with businesses on three industry-commissioned projects this year. These projects form the Aspirations Employability Portfolio (AEP) and the project-based learning takes place every Tuesday during Periods 2-5. Each project involves students working with, and learning from, real employees of the commissioning company.

There are three projects that are currently running. One group has been set the challenge of redeveloping Kidderminster Railway Station. Students paid a visit to the station in order to observe operational requirements, take site photos and collect all data required for model making during the next week. Another group is working on redesigning the R21 egg labelling machine. The students have already looked at the operation of the present machine, attended electronics workshops and started to research similar machines and ideas for the development of a new labeller. The third group is investigating the design of an access tunnel under the main runway at Heathrow Airport. The students visited Heathrow Airport on Tuesday, 27 September to see first-hand the methods required for building an access tunnel. They went on tour of the site and took part in workshops which included trial hole digging and cutting steel. The students now have a much clearer idea of the issues they will be faced with when designing the tunnel.

Sixth Form AEP StudentsI am excited that these projects will provide every student with the opportunity to develop the range of skills and capabilities required for success in today’s global world. Students will gain an understanding of the nature of different businesses, entrepreneurial skills and innovation, as well as the project-based learning skills of critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity.

I wish them all the best of luck on their adventure!
